OLYPHANT — The nominees for the 2016 Steamtown Music Awards were announced July 3, at Thirst T’s Bar & Grill.

Chosen acts and talents were revealed in 35 categories covering many genres and aspects of the regional music scene and musical media.

Nominations come on the heels of an announcement that local reggae legend, George Wesley, will receive the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Electric City Music Conference producer Joe Caviston said he and co-organizer, Ken Norton, are excited the local community has embraced the Steamtown Music Awards.

“It seems like as we enter year three, it’s added a level of credibility to the event,” Caviston said. “The bands are excited about the event and truly the ambassadors of it, more than Ken or I ever could be.”

Caviston said community buzz has as much to do with the music conference and live performances as it does with the actual awards, and he sees the event as a good networking opportunity for artists who would not normally be in the same room together.

“My mind is blown every single year at the amount of diversity in the local music scene,” Caviston said.

This year’s panel has been diversified, adding music industry professionals in touch with both local and national music scenes.

“I can truly say I have a profound respect for every person on the panel,” Caviston said.

Caviston calls the awards ceremony his favorite day of the year.

Intrigued to see bands like Boneflower, Umbriel and Mercy Gang play live, Caviston said he’s proud and humbled to present the Lifetime Achievement honor to Wesley.

“He’s one of the most genuine people I know, and no one is more deserving of this music scene’s respect and honor than he is.”
