It’s that time of year again, football season. You know what that means? It’s time for Madden season with the release of “Madden NFL 16.” Madden is one of the biggest video game releases of the year even if you aren’t a big gamer. It’s typically the standard for football games and it attracts sports fans who might not be gamers throughout the the year.

Madden is one of the longest running football games on the market. The quality and attention to detail is amazing and they always manage to tweak the systems and make the game better in graphics, play and artificial intelligence.

Madden is the best looking football game on the market. There are some new on-field graphics like you see when watching a game, like arrows and lines, there are even some new on-screen statistics that are interesting to see.

The biggest change this year is the new passing system. The controls take some getting used to but once you get the hang of it, it makes playing offense a great experience. There are new options when it comes to receivers, you can choose different ways to catch the ball depending on the circumstance.

The “aggressive catches,” are your highlight-reel catches. You can use the “run-after-catch” if your player is wide open, and there is a “possession catch” mode. If you don’t know which to use there are prompts above your receiver’s heads so you can decide on the fly. You can determine how high or low the pass will be using the left stick for aiming, adding more control options.

The new passing controls can work in defense helping you make interceptions but, it is harder because you are reacting instead of making the action.

There is a new game mode called “Draft Champions.” You play 15 rounds and can draft one of three players for your team. You then play against the computer or online. It’s hard to understand how these teams are set up because the drafts are random, but it teaches you how to play with different team styles. Draft champions is similar to a Fantasy Football team. Most of the other popular game modes are back such as last year’s Connected Franchise Mode. Connected Franchise allows you to manage your team and play the game to improve your team. It now has new challenge driven features. If you complete the listed challenges you gain experience points toward upgrading your team, and give them a confidence boost so you have an advantage going into the next game.

I am not a big sports fan but I like to try “Madden” to see what is different. The new gameplay mechanics with the passing and receiving make the game feel more realistic and make the passing game more enjoyable. The upgraded defense makes the the field play feel like a spectacular experience. Along with new game modes and upgraded graphics it’s not hard to see why “Madden” is the top football game to come out each year. It’s the little attention to details that really make it worth checking out each year and this is one of the best in recent memory.

If you are not a big sports fan you might not want to buy the game but based on the presentation and the graphics you have to at least appreciate the look of the game. If you want to get into “Madden” now is the time because the “Madden NFL 16” is the best it’s been in a while.
