TUNKHANNOCK — Open Mic at the Dietrich Theater on Friday, Sept. 25 features budding authors from the Dietrich Theater Writers Group. Everyone is invited to come and hear excerpts from works in progress that you may see on bookshelves some day. Five writers who are honing their craft at the Dietrich Theater’s Writers Group every Thursday evening would like to share their stories with the Open Mic audience, giving them yet another way to receive input by way of the audience reaction. Some day you may be able to say, “I heard the author speak back in 2015 at the Dietrich Theater.”
Open Mic is now a much anticipated free event at the Dietrich Theater, held on the fourth Friday of the month from March through October. Musicians, writers, comedians, and performers of all types are invited to share their talents on the Fassett Performing Arts Studio stage. Doors open for sign-ups at 6:30 p.m. and their performances begin at 7:00 p.m. The evening begins with the new performers and continues with the featured guests.
Half the fun is seeing who shows up to perform. Past performers have included a ventriloquist, storyteller, comedian, poets, a variety of musicians from keyboardist to guitarist. Performers find it to be a very welcoming and encouraging atmosphere for both new performers and those who are experienced. It is an evening that is perfect for all ages. Host Angelo Maruzzelli makes sure that everyone is comfortable, appreciated, and encouraged, and Mary VanVliet makes sure that all the technical demands are in order and that everyone is signed up and knows the format.
