Remember the times when ladies had to wear hats and gloves if they were out and about? Neither do I, but I don’t think that would be all that bad. And if looking put-together and maybe even semi-formal became a social norm again, well, goodness knows present day society would certainly benefit.
Nowadays, it’s difficult to even make someone get out of her pajamas and into a pair of jeans to go grocery shopping. And heaven forbid one actually gets out of slippers and into a pair of shoes before going to the mini mart and pumping gas. Drives me insane. Looking presentable does not have to mean designer clothes. What it does mean, however, is to look, well, presentable. And that means actually changing from the clothes worn to bed the night before.
When ladies were expected to look like ladies, they were not seen without a hat and pair of gloves. Times have changed, and ladies do not have to look as prim and proper as the past. But this does not mean some of those ultra feminine looks must also be forgotten. It may not seem appropriate to wear a hat on a daily basis and gloves with the wrong outfit would appear jarring because, after all, women are no longer forced to wear dresses when leaving the house either. But with the right attire, the perfect ensemble, a pair of vintage gloves can take an acceptable outfit and turn it into a more formal one with a little bit of kick. Gloves aren’t really worn by many, so wearing them as an accessory to complete an outfit certainly makes a statement.
There is a multitude of styles when choosing the perfect pair of gloves. The gloves chosen to top off the outfit, really depends upon the overall look one is trying to achieve. For example, if it is a formal occasion and a dress is the outfit of choice, a pair of long gloves can really turn heads, especially if the dress is strapless. But if an evening gown isn’t the night’s chosen selection but rather a fitted skirt suit fits the environment better, perhaps a pair of lace gloves that come just past the wrist would be best. Material of an outfit must not be overlooked as well. If a dress is silk, only silk gloves should be worn. Cotton ones would destroy the formal look and lace ones would completely knock the materials off balance, which makes the overall look appear confusing.
When shopping for vintage gloves, the obvious starting point is a store that carries vintage clothes. Antique stores should not be bypassed as a lot of antique stores have a section of vintage clothes and sometimes a box of vintage gloves, inexpensively priced could be hiding among all the items.
As stated in prior Style Files, Benton Antiques on Main Street in Benton is the place to go. Besides all the fantastic vintage furniture, home dcor items, jewelry and fur coats, they always have vintage gloves just waiting to be discovered. They have all different materials, including gold lame ones once in a while if luck is in the air. This is a perfect way to start a vintage glove collection without breaking the bank.
Vintage gloves simply bring an outfit home and will certainly allow others know that attention to detail is a must. A woman who takes time to accessorize an outfit with a great pair of gloves is a woman who just may know what being a lady — wardrobe-wise — is all about.
