Time to make some romper room

After seeing a commercial for an MP3 music service, I fell in love with it. Not the company or the song they were playing in the commercial, but rather the outfit the model was wearing in the commercial. Looking back, I wore these all the time when I was a kid. Although a much more juvenile style obviously, as I was about 7 when I use to sport them, the philosophy remains the same: one piece of clothing that you can climb in and out of that is comfortable and easy to wear in the summer. I love them and am overjoyed that their comeback is fully loaded with tons of different styles, inventory in many different stores, and all different price ranges depending upon the degree of casualness.

The romper is back, and this is a joyous occasion for all those who seek the low maintenance attire we became familiar with two decades ago.

Depending upon the fabric and style of the romper, your prices will vary. For the more sporty romper, such as one in terry cloth, you’ll pay significantly less (unless it’s from Juicy Couture). These rompers are as causal as they get and are meant for informal settings during the summer. For example, you are running errands and want to be comfortable as you are getting in and out of your car. Be cautious with the terrycloth romper, however. Unless you are going for a Fergalicious look, best not to pair up with a pair of sneakers. You are going for comfortable style, not a hip-hop dance contest. Your intended look could go askew and result in a less than desirable music video costume. Choose your footwear carefully. I personally had a terrycloth romper when I was about 8 years old and wore it to Williamsburg, Va., as we toured the area during 90-degree weather (I rocked it with flip-flops). It was the perfect outfit for the occasion. Kudos to Mom.

Choose a romper made of finer fabric and with a dressier look when wanting to go out for a causal dinner, outlet shopping, an arts festival, etc. When out and about for summer events or traveling, the dressier romper is ideal. It is easy to slip on, it looks great with a pair of sandals, and it will keep you cool with summer’s high temps. You must be cautious when choosing the dressier romper as well. Make sure the romper fits your correctly. If it is too tight, you are going to look like an adult trying to squeeze into a little kid’s outfit. Since it has a more youthful look by nature, you want to adhere to your correct clothing measurements. You want to look like a fashionable woman, not Raggedy Andy. And if you try to wear pigtails in your hair while wearing the romper, you might as well start playing hopscotch as your look will be better suited for the playground than a trip to the Finger Lakes.

Start your shopping — warm weather is right around the corner. Three cheers for the return of the romper. Wear them the right way, and you’ll be styling in comfort this upcoming season. That’s something to look forward to.
