Say it with flowers

Flowers can make the perfect accessory. No, I don’t mean live flowers that will eventually wilt and die, but rather flowers that you can wear forever. Sure, it would be very nice to wear a fresh flower in your hair every day but let’s face it; we’re not residing in Hawaii. And due to the fact that we don’t have fresh orchids at our disposal for hair accessories on a daily basis we’ll have to compromise and come up with a solution that will be convenient for our needs — and our weather.

One rather simple solution is to make our own flower accessories. Simply go to any craft store and choose flowers that you like. Purchase a hot glue gun and a bobby pin or two, and you’re in business. You can design a flower clip that will make it look as though you have placed a flower directly in your hair or you can design it in such a way where you can tell it is a hair clip by adding a lot of ornate touches such as rhinestones or buttons.

During the summer months, you may be able to find a lot of clothes that come adorned with a flower accessory. For example, you might be able to find tank tops or blouses that come with a flower pin. Your first step is to wear the piece of clothing as it comes. But directly afterwards, take the pin off the top and keep it with your other accessories. This is done for two reasons. The first is that you don’t want to keep wearing it on the same top as it become obvious that the pin came with the top. You’re more creative than that. The second reason is if you place the pin with your other accessories, you’ll remember that it is an item you can mix and match with other ensembles and it can motivate you to experiment with your outfits.

And don’t get stuck in thinking a pin can only be worn as a pin on a shirt. I have plenty of flower pins that came with specific articles of clothing but I will also wear as a hair accessory. Once I remove it from the top, I can pin it to a hair clip, a hat, a purse, even a necklace if I feel really creative.

The more variety you have the better. Buying flowers of different materials from the craft store gives you more versatility when choosing a flower to complete your outfit. Cloth flowers with translucent petals, crocheted flowers and even leather flowers can add just the right touch to an otherwise boring get up.

Seen here is a collection of flowers of all sizes and all made of different materials. The pink leather one looks great on a hat or purse. The large grey one looks great in your hair, especially at the base of a hair bun. The wool one looks good on a cardigan or blazer, but you probably couldn’t pull it off in your hair. It would simply appear too heavy on your head.

So lighten up your look and add a little flower to your look. Get creative with it, and experiment with the flower placement. You can create a whole new look by simply changing where you place a flower pin. This will also add a little femininity to your style, and who knows, it just may add a little lightheartedness to your personality … at least for the day.
