An interview with Dj vu Salon’s owner Ranae Smigiel about its new hair treatment, the Brazilian Blowout.
WEEKENDER: How do you define the Brazilian Blowout?
SMIGIEL: If your hair is wavy, the Brazilian Blowout will make your hair appear naturally straight and healthy. If your hair is very curly, it will minimize frizz while enhancing the appearance of the natural wave/curl. If you have straight, frizzy hair, this treatment will eliminate frizz and promote radiant shine.
WEEKENDER: How did you find out about the Brazilian Blowout?
SMIGIEL: I found out about the Brazilian Blowout early on this year when it started taking Hollywood celebrities by storm. Stars like Nicole Richie, Halle Berry (and) Ashley Tisdale were featured in different ads and magazines talking about the latest hair trend invading Hollywood, “The Brazilian Blowout.” So I went to the International Beauty Show determined to get certified and bring this great treatment back to NEPA.
WEEKENDER: What type of hair is this treatment best for?
SMIGIEL: This treatment is for anyone who has frizzy, damaged or processed hair. Everyone can benefit from the Brazilian Blowout smoothing treatment.
WEEKENDER: What can a customer expect when receiving this treatment?
SMIGIEL: You can expect totally frizz-free, shiny, hair with plenty of body and bounce. There will still be the option to wear hair curly/wavy (depending on the hair type) and the freedom to blow dry hair smooth and straight in a fraction of the time invested prior to receiving the treatment. Through the use of a Brazilian Super Nutrient Complex and a proprietary polymer system, the Brazilian Blowout actually improves the condition of the hair by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle.
WEEKENDER: How long does the procedure take?
SMIGIEL: The procedure takes about 90 minutes.
WEEKENDER: How often can/should someone get a treatment?
SMIGIEL: The Brazilian Blowout is just like a conditioning treatment, so you will not harm the hair by performing them too soon or too much, however, please remember that you can only fill the cuticle to its capacity. The hair will revert to its original state once the Brazilian Blowout treatment has completed its life cycle of 10-12 weeks, however, the condition of the hair will actually improve as a result of the fortifying and conditioning nature of the product. I recommend every three or four months.
WEEKENDER: What’s the aftercare like?
SMIGIEL: Brazilian Blowout Acai Hair Care is an aftercare product regimen developed for the sole purpose of extending the life of the Brazilian Blowout professional smoothing treatment. It includes a frizz-free shampoo, a frizz-free conditioner and a smoothing serum.
WEEKENDER: Who started this procedure?
SMIGIEL: The Brazilian Blow out originated by Britney Huinker in West Hollywood.
WEEKENDER: Is this a unisex procedure?
SMIGIEL: It is a unisex treatment. Some men like to wear their hair on the longer side, and they love the shine and the smoothness just as much as the ladies do.
WEEKENDER: Can the chemicals hurt your hair?
SMIGIEL: The chemicals in the Brazilian Blowout can not hurt your hair. Through the use of a Brazilian Super Nutrient Complex and a proprietary polymer system, the Brazilian Blowout actually improves the condition of the hair by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle. Some Salons are advertising “Keratin smoothing treatments.” This is not the same thing as The Brazilian Blowout. Most of the other treatments contain formaldehyde, not a chemical I want to work with!
WEEKENDER: Is it expensive?
SMIGIEL: We charge $150 for the treatment, and our clients that have had the treatment say it’s worth every penny, and they are spending less money on products they previously needed to tame down curl and frizz.
