Glass: Not just for stemware

Forget home goods — glass can hold its own in the fashion industry as well. Jewelry designers are working more and more with glass for its variety of colors, flexibility with creative designs and for sheer aesthetic reasons as well. Sure, you have to be a bit more cautious when wearing glass accessories, but what’s a little caution when it comes to wearing pieces of art on your body, literally.

There needs to be some thought when deciding if glass jewelry is a route you want like to explore. If your job requires physical labor, you can of course still buy glass jewelry, but you obviously can’t risk wearing it at work as one slight tap to the glass, and it can shatter. If this is the case, save the glass jewelry for special occasions. If you have an office job, there is less of a risk of anything happening to your jewelry, although accidentally hitting your adorned wrist can end in broken accessories.

The type of glass and how it is made obviously play crucial roles in the longevity of your jewelry. While on vacation, I was trying on glass bracelets and was moving too fast. I accidentally dropped one of the bracelets resulting in a big chip and the inevitable purchase of a now-broken bracelet. Because the chip isn’t glaring, I still try to wear it, but I have to be really careful as the glass can actually cut me. And for as much as I love fashion, I’m not about to get a bloody wrist from flawed accessory.

The best glass bracelets to buy are elastic ones. They seem to move a little bit more with your natural hand gestures and are easier to wear all together. The worst type of glass bracelets are bangles. It is simply hard to prevent them from clanging around and ultimately, hitting something that will cause them to crack. Outside of bracelets, glass slides and pins can make for beautiful pieces of jewelry. I’d stay away from glass rings all together. It is just too hard to avoid accidents because you use your hands so much.

Have fun with colors when picking glass jewelry. If it is made of blown glass, you can wear really interesting pieces with very unique designs throughout the piece. Glass slides can be worn on chains but also look really good on black or brown cables. Versatility is your friend so if you have a glass slide, try both versions to go for different looks.

Privately owned boutiques and art and craft shows are the places to look when shopping for glass jewelry. They’ll be the ones to carry special glass artists and jewelry designers. You can wear commercial glass pieces or one of a kind pieces with no designs that look alike. The latter equals true art and often come with information about the artist. Take care of these pieces as you would an original painting. This is art for the sake of fashion and beauty and should be treated with care.
