Some clothing lines start with huge budgets and a team full of high-profile designers. And then there’s Glamour Kills. Founder Mark Capicotto had a need to transfer his art to fabric. With a high school diploma fresh under his belt in 2005, Capicotto went to business in his parents’ basement in the suburbs of New York. Starting off with five shirts, Capicotto’s first design was the now-famous Glamour Kills flying pig. Believing that the phrase “when pigs fly” means the sky’s the limit, Capicotto shapes his life around this motto, displaying the message through art. It was a huge plus that people liked the work and began purchasing the T-shirts.
Through grassroots marketing, Capicotto began pushing his T-shirts at local concerts and eventually began growing his Web site, glamourkills.com. The 21-year-old outgrew his parents’ basement and moved into a warehouse.
Designing every shirt himself, Capicotto strongly felt that the music scene needed some color. During a time when the trend was dark and moody, Capicotto began to introduce bright colors to the youthful shirts, resulting in a more lighthearted, fun look. Today, Capicotto and his team design all the shirts, print them at American Icon and fulfill all the orders. He still comes up with all the ideas for the designs and is excited about the new Glamour Kills clothing category, swimsuits, which just launched in May. In addition to clothing, Glamour Kills also makes skateboard decks, jewelry and totes.
Being that the company is centered on music, it makes sense that the indie music genre has shown Glamour Kills a lot of love. Bands such as Cobra Starship, Boys Like Girls, A Day to Remember, etc. have all been seen wearing the designs.
With retailers such as the national chain Zumiez carrying Glamour Kills, everyone can feel like a rocker while maintaining Capicotto’s artistic intent. Right in stride of the music-originated mission statement, Capicotto’s newest adventure includes the Vans Warped Tour, where Glamour Kills will be on site for the entire summer tour. Selling Glamour Kills merchandise as well as giving away free stuff to the crowd, you can check it out right in your own backyard. Vans Warped Tour hits Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain on Wednesday, July 15.
“The Scranton stop on Warped Tour is one of my favorites to attend on the entire tour,” Capicotto said. “The attendees and fans are the best, and the layout is pretty awesome!”
Be sure to look for the Glamour Kills stand while you bounce from stage to stage. Mark will be on site. Show him your Glamour Kills duds or purchase some at the concert to express your love of music, art, pop culture and the entrepreneurial spirit. Glamour Kills has the whole package. It just may take over the entire fashion industry … when pigs fly. Guess that means the chances are pretty good.
