TIPS FROM A BARBIE CHICK: Find your perfect jacket

With the weather outside soon turning frightful, it’s best to be prepared with a warm yet fashionable winter jacket for these next few months. This isn’t a decision to take lightly because for us, winter is not just two or three months out of the year and not just a few flakes scattered throughout December. We all know we’ll be braving blizzards soon and dealing with icy roads lasting until March. Like it or not, you will be getting more than enough use out of this winter jacket, so it’s best to shop with that in mind and make sure you love it before buying it.

Have a good idea of what type of jacket fits your body type before entering the store. Trench coats flatters taller types well, whereas a pea coat, which stops at the waist, better fits a petite woman.

As far as colors go, black is a good option for someone that needs an everyday coat that they know is going to go with everything. But don’t be afraid to branch out and look at other colors. For those who don’t want to be too dangerous, dark blue or purple is a great change to make you stand out just a bit. Plaid patterns are an easy sophisticated look and surprisingly versatile with most outfits. Don’t be afraid to try some bright colors for the winter, too. Bright red or mustard looks fantastic against a snowy white background and dresses up any outfit.

Stay away from the extremely puffy, down-filled jacket. While they may be the most practical, they are not flattering for any body shape. Unless you enjoy the winter weather a little too much and plan on spending more than enough time outside in the snow, it is unnecessary to have one of those marshmallow-looking things for anything other than shoveling snow or having a snowball fight.
