A green-hued block party

It seems like everybody is going green these days, and that’s definitely not a bad thing. From noon to 8 p.m. this Saturday, the 300 block of Adams Avenue in downtown Scranton will be strictly a green-zone only.

Re:Cycle on Adams, according to the event’s 100 percent solar-powered Web site, is a “green-minded” block party dedicated to the local community sustainability and promoting alternative transportation. The eight hours of green activities will include more than 30 vendors, musicians and also children’s activities.

“One of the main sponsors and biggest help in throwing the event is Lackawanna County,” says Cristin Powers. “They did the Bike and Scooter festival last year, so I wanted to combine the two events this year. So I talked to Maureen McGuigan of Lackawanna County about the idea, and she helped make it happen.”

The Bike and Scooter festival that took place in Scranton last August had the same intentions of the Re:Cycle on Adams event in relation to its green solutions to transportation. McGuigan, who had a hand in the preparation of this Saturday’s event, coordinated the Bike and Scooter festival. The mission statement of the event is identical to Re:Cycle on Adams: an effort to get people involved in doing environment-friendly activities.

Also the owner of the environmentally friendly clothing store Green Being, Powers is also the event coordinator for Re:Cycle on Adams. Her store will be one of the many open on in the 300 block of Adams Avenue during block party hours.

Like many other business that are doing raffles, she is giving block partygoers the opportunity to win a special synergy organic dress from Green Being. There will be three dresses given away at small, medium and large sizes. The synergy organic dresses are made of SKAL-certified organic cotton, dyed with low-impact dyes, according to the Synergy Organic online description.

Some musical acts performing at Re:Cycle on Adams include Satellite, Das Black Milk, Cabinet, Kid Icarus, Nicole Erin Carey, The Indobox, and an after-party performance at The Bog by Clarks Summit drum-and-bass fusion trio Rogue Chimp. Also be ready to cut a rug for a dance party with Panked! Keep it on the down low, but say the secret password “recycle” upon entrance of The Bog and receive a discounted cover charge.

The Bog will also offer outdoor seating and beverages all day long. Oddly enough there will not be any food vendors at the event. Luckily, the nearby restaurants will stay open for the entire block party.

At Eden, A Vegan Caf, the entire menu and outdoor seating will be available. Neighboring Adams Avenue restaurants Thai Rak Thai and Panda China will also be open all day, says Powers.

Also participating Saturday will be Embassy Vinyl, Essence of Paradise and Marc’s Tattooing.

The event is family-oriented. The children’s tents will keep the youngsters occupied and entertained, and kids will have the privilege to construct some environment-friendly objects, such as bottle-cap magnets and puzzle-piece magnets.

“It’s a great opportunity to hear good music and do some shopping all day,” says Powers.

If you can’t attend and still want to check out some music from the event, you can log on to wormradio.com where the entire event is set to be broadcasted live until 8 p.m.
