I quote movies all the time.
I daresay that I have an almost photographic memory for movie quotes. Never mind the fact that I have to wallpaper my house in stickies to remind myself of doctor appointments and whatnot.
I love to quote something and then excitedly exclaim, “What movie? What movie?” to whatever coworker is within earshot. Usually I hear crickets, but sometimes someone will humor me and play along. I love and live for those moments.
Some of my favorite movies to spew quotes from are “Wedding Crashers,” “Anchorman” and “Monty Python.”
But my ultimate favorite is — and I think it’s safe to say always will be — “Wayne’s World.” (Obviously only the first one. I cannot even bear to talk about the second one.) I remember seeing the movie as a freshmen in high school at the Gateway Cinema and laughing my ass off with my best friend.
I’ve been known to sing out of the blue “… and her name was Cassandra.” One of my favorite lines is “Who’s Anthony? Who’s Anthony?” to which our graphic artist Steve (or I, depending on which of us is asking and answering) will say, “My drummer!”
The list goes on: “Asphinctersayswhat? Exactly!” “It’s sucking my will to live!” “It’s not just a clever name.” “Hi, I’m in Delaware,” and “I definitely smell a pork product of some kind.”
While I’ve always liked Queen’s music, I know it’s probably an insult to the band that I admit I can’t help but think of “Wayne’s World” whenever I hear “Bohemian Rhapsody.” And cha, of course I bang my head at the appropriate time.
I got the idea to write this blog when Steve and I had one of our “Anthony” moments and Editor Mike kind of looked at us like we were crazy. After explaining these special moments Steve and I share, it made me wonder just how long I’ve been quoting this.
Though I knew I was a freshman in 1992, it wasn’t until I actually sat back and realized that 1992 was a whopping 16 years ago.
I’ve been laughing about and quoting “Wayne’s World” for 16 years.
And not once have monkeys flown out of my butt.
Excellent!
(Or “Zang,” if you speak Cantonese.)
