It was a huge deal when the soft opening for Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs' new $50 million, seven-story hotel and convention center occurred in November – but this weekend is the time to really crank the excitement level up and celebrate the new addition in style with days packed with grand opening events.
“The team here at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs has been working very hard since we broke ground to get to this point,” said Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs president Mike Bean.
“Our soft opening in November has given us a chance to work through some kinks. I am extremely proud of our team and the incredible effort that has been put forth in opening and operating the hotel. Our Mohegan Sun team does a great job and works hard every day at providing our guests with a great experience. This weekend is the culmination of a lot of hard work by a lot of truly great people.”
This weekend's grand opening activities include a VIP dinner and private show with late night talk show host Jay Leno, a free concert by the Bacon Brothers (yes, as in actor Kevin and his brother, Michael), and appearances by Derek Hough and Emma Slater of “Dancing with the Stars” fame.
The hotel opened on the seven-year anniversary that the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority opened the first casino in Pennsylvania at the harness racing track on Route 315. At the time, the casino had about 1,200 slot machines.
Since then, the establishment has grown to include more than 2,300 slot machines, 84 gaming tables, and over a dozen bars and restaurants. The employee number has shot from a mere 194 to 2,000, and with the hotel came an additional 250 employees.
The creation of local jobs is just one of many perks the hotel offers to its surrounding community.
“The hotel provides our guests, both local and those who come from a distance, with outstanding on-site overnight accommodations, so they can enjoy all of Mohegan Sun's amenities much longer and without having to worry about driving home,” Bean said.
The hotel also offers several perks to guests. Each room is equipped with flat screen TVs, digital phones, iPad compendiums, paintings by local artists, and modern bathrooms with stone walls and glass-door showers. There is a spa opening soon, and a planned pool, fitness center, and bistro bar.
It doesn't end there.
“The events center provides a venue for year-round entertainment, and the conference center provides the area with the opportunity to bring out-of-area groups who wouldn't otherwise visit Northeast Pennsylvania to the area,” Bean said. “Out-of-area dollars help stimulate the local economy.”
Even though this weekend is a big one, Mohegan is already looking ahead to the future.
“As we move into the spring, we will ramp up to several concerts per month in addition to our traditional events, such as Party on the Patio – where we feature tribute bands every Thursday – PA Oktoberfest, Craft Beer Fest, and more,” Bean said.
Upcoming shows include Darrell Hammond on Feb. 8 and John Cafferty on Feb. 21.
