Kohner Rice has been all over the place since starting his singing career – he makes sure to hit any venue and crowd he can, using his time as a musician to garner experience and growth through a bevy of things. It’s no different with his new EP, “Your New Favorite Song,” a five-track compilation that’s taken Rice into different music territory.
The Dallas, Pa., native has strayed slightly from strict hip-hop and melded his cleverly crafted words with pop and club backbeats. “Your New Favorite Song” is a pop album, to be sure, but none of the songs overstay their welcome, like so many sugary sweet tunes often do.
Four out of the five songs are produced by DJ Shaw-T and feature Rice’s brother, Brandon.
Love song “La La La” and feel-good tune “Party and Drink” are regular club thumpers, though the latter is laced with a rock ‘n’ roll vibe.
“Starlight” will have listeners singing along by the end, even upon first listen. It’s a song that can very easily be imagined as a top radio hit, and it has a cool, flip-book style music video to go along with it.
“The Life” is another track with an accompanying music video and showcases what Rice has portrayed since the moment he picked up a mic: an eagerness to succeed, to become big in the music industry.
The standout, however, is the final track, “Shine,” which was produced by Joe Loftus and includes vocals from Britt Rice and musical assists from Karl Crupa, Feres Houssein, Jay Preston, and Joe Loftus.
It’s got a hint of jazz and more meaningful lyrics, musing on life itself and Rice’s newest musical twist, asking the question, “Are the pop hits too excessive?”
If those to follow are anything like the ones heard hear, no – the pop hits are just right.
