This time of year in NEPA, we are overcome with joy in celebrating the St. Patrick’s Day parades and, of course, St. Patrick’s Day itself as well. However, for many beer drinkers, there are only a handful of go-to beers for this time of year.

Some reach for mass-marketed yellow fizzy beer and others reach for the old reliable Guinness. While there is nothing wrong with Guinness, there are a vast number of even better, more flavorful beers available at our fingertips due to the current craft beer revolution we are undergoing. So on a day when we celebrate by indulging in our favorite pastime, drinking beer, why not reach for some really good beer?

If you happen to find yourself or a loved one drinking pale yellow fizzy beer, don’t worry – there is help for you to recover from this debilitating disease. Many craft brewers have begun to take back those mass-produced styles of beer and have begun making truly flavorful and enjoyable versions of them.

If you are looking for a beer on the lighter side during this time of celebration, try any of these: Avery Brewing Company, Joe’s Premium American Pilsner; Victory Brewing Company, Prima Pils; Tröegs Brewing Company, Sunshine Pils; and Stoudt’s Brewing Co., Stoudt’s Pils.

However, if you are looking for more in the Irish Red style ale, there is no shortage of fine craft selections within that category as well. Locally, we are fortunate enough to have 3 Guys & a Beer’d with their Malarkey and Berwick Brewing with their fantastic Irish Red. There are also many other great examples available, such as: Harpoon Brewery, Celtic Ale; Boulevard Brewing Co., Irish Ale; Great Lakes Brewing Company, Conway’s Irish Ale; and Thirsty Dog Brewing Company, Irish Setter Red.

Stouts are a delicious and enjoyable beer. Guinness has been producing its world renowned stout since 200 years ago and the brewery has attracted many loyalists over that timeframe.

However, in the recent years with craft brewers venturing into new territories and reclaiming styles that seemingly belonged to specific breweries or lost to history, stouts have had their own renaissance.

Loyalists to the Irish dry stout should try some others within that same category, such as: Brooklyn Brewery, Dry Irish Stout; North Coast Brewing Co., Old No. 38 Stout; Carlow Brewing Company, O’Hara’s Irish Stout; and Victory Brewing Company, Donnybrook Stout.

Those seeking something bigger and more flavorful from their stouts have an endless array of fantastic beers to try, such as: Yards Brewing Company, Love Stout; Magic Hat, Heart of Darkness; Sierra Nevada, Sierra Nevada Stout; Rogue Ales, Chocolate Stout; and Samuel Smith Old Brewery, Oatmeal Stout.

Once you acquire a taste for flavorful beers, it is simply impossible to turn back. The lists provided showcase just a small amount of great craft beers that you can try during your celebrations. So while you are out shopping for your green shirt, face paint, and hat, pick up some great craft beer. St. Patrick would be proud!
