Jeremy Mayfield may not be publicly saying what banned substances he has tested positive for, but at least one media source is reporting that the substance may be much worse that just a prescription and some cold medicine.

ESPN the Magazine is reporting that two different sources have confirmed that Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamine during a random drug test on May 1 at Richmond International Raceway, discounting Mayfield’s constant argument that the test is a result of combining the allergy medicine Claritin-D with Adderall-XR, which Mayfield contends he was prescribed by a doctor to treat ADHD.

According to ESPN the Magazine, Mayfield tested positive for both the Claritin-D and Adderall-XR in the random test but also tested positive for a third substance. That substance has been redacted in every reference in court documents filed as part of Mayfield’s federal lawsuit against NASCAR seeking a temporary restraining order to halt his suspension pending an investigation.

According to the article, though, the two independent sources are now saying that the drug is methamphetamine.

Court documents filed in the lawsuit Mayfield filed to halt his suspension by NASCAR, pending an investigation into the positive result have been redacted anywhere the reference to the third drug, and all parties involved are subject to a court-mandated gag order.

According to Mayfield’s complaint in the court case, Mayfield also alleges that, upon being questioned by Dr. Douglas F. Aukerman of Penn State Orthopedics and Rehabilitation in State College, Mayfield disclosed that although he hadn’t taken any inhalants prior to the drug test, he did inhale a large amount of fumes a week prior to the Richmond race at Talladega during “a fiery wreck.”.

Aukerman, who was assisting NASCAR in the testing, dismissed the claim regarding the wreck, according to Mayfield’s complaint.

Mayfield was suspended by NASCAR on May 9 and has been prohibited from appearing at any NASCAR tracks.

TRUEX TO WALTRIP RACING?

The long-rumored move of Martin Truex Jr. to Michael Waltrip Racing gained a little bit longer legs last weekend when Michael Waltrip himself wouldn’t deny the possibility of signing Truex to drive the No. 55 Napa Auto Parts Toyota, according to SceneDaily.com.

SceneDaily.com writer Jeff Gluck reported this week that Waltrip hinted to the Truex move last week at Michigan International Speedway, saying that “you just have to figure that (Truex is) one of the ones that no one knows where he’s going. He’s been a Chase guy. He stumbled in and has run up front from the beginning, so I don’t know what the future holds. But he might be one of those on that list that would be better than me.”

Truex, who currently drives the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats Chevrolet for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, will be without a contract at the end of the 2009 season.

A NEW CHEVY TEAM?

FoxSports.com is reporting that Team Red Bull may be switching from Toyota to Chevy next season.

According to the report, Team Red Bull’s contract with Toyota expires at the end of this season, and the possibility of the team ending up with Chevy is a definite possibility.

Team owner and Austrian billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz could afford to pay for the parts himself, and Team Red Bull General Manager Jay Frye has strong ties to the Hendrick Motorsports engine building operation from his days with Ginn Racing and MB2 Motorsports.
