RIDE OF THE WEEK: A classic is new again

Last week Motorhead featured one of the classic Chevrolets of all time: the 1957 Bel Air. This week, we turn to the most modern of Chevys, a 2010 Camaro SS that’s producing a fair amount of excitement of its own. For Larry Petrochko, the choice of the 2010 Camaro was easy.

“I wanted a cool car,” Petrochko says. “And I wanted to help and show some support for General Motors. If they keep putting out cars like this, I’m sure they will be back on top soon. It’s been a great car.”

Car information Web site Edmunds.com says the new Camaro “not only lives up to the hype, but redefines what a muscle car can be.” The 2010 model marks the return of the car to the Chevy lineup — it was originally produced from 1967-2002. GM created the Camaro to compete with the Ford Mustang. In 2006, the company began development on a new Camaro and the 2010 went into production this past March.

Petrochko’s 8-cylinder Camaro has a V8 engine with 6-speed automatic transmission. The car has 400 horsepower and 395 lb./ft. of torque. The SS features four-piston Brembo brakes, an FE3 suspension and the StabiliTrak stability control system has an additional Competitive/Sport mode. It rides on 20-inch aluminum wheels.

Petrochko picked midnight blue over silver for the exterior color of his Camaro.

“I wasn’t really a fan of the bright yellow or bright orange with the stripes that I think make it look too much like a Dodge Charger,” he explains.

The car is rear wheel drive, which is why Petrochko didn’t trade in his old car.

“My previous car was a 2000 Jeep Wrangler. I didn’t trade it in because I figured I could drive it when we get snow and ice. I’m not going to let the Camaro see any snow or road salt for quite a while,” he says.
