Here are some affordable, if not free, ideas for the weekend. Riverfest: Free! The annual event along the Susquehanna River takes place this weekend with river trips, live music, children’s activities and more. The fun starts from 5 to 9 p.m. on June 19 and continues through June 21, concluding with the Dragon Boat Races. Festivities begin at Millennium Circle and Nesbitt Park.
Third Friday: Free! It’s that time again, the third Friday of the month is here and downtown Wilkes-Barre will be a flutter with activity. Check out the featured artist and stop by local businesses.
Rattlesnake Roundup: Free! Yeah, you read that correctly. This annual fundraiser features a hunt and display of rattlesnakes along with a carnival of amusement rides, games, vendors, craft show, food, a firefighters’ parade on June 20 and fireworks on June 21. Entertainment includes Strawberry Jam (Friday), Cool Ride (Saturday) and Mace in Dickson (Sunday). Corvette Show. Free! There are so many reasons one should go to a Corvette show. Beautiful cars driven by beautiful people (hopefully). There will be more than 100 Corvettes along with food and entertainment. Head to Fairway Chevrolet, 1101 N. Church St. in Hazle Township between 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 20. Diversity Picnic. Free! Black, white, gay, straight…. however you identify, stop by the 17th annual event, hosted by the Wilkes-Barre NAACP/Diversity Institute and celebrate all our differences. There will be food, games and prizes and lots of diversity. Bring a chair or blanket and head to Pavilion #3 at Kirby Park, Wilkes-Barre. Noon to 5 p.m. June 20. 570-817-2776.
Craft Beer Festival: $20! Admission to this event gets you 12 tastings and an entry to raffles throughout the day. From 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, there will be food, music, and beer from breweries including Weyerbacher, Victory, Star Hill, Evil Genius and more. If you can’t make it on Saturday, check out their Father’s Day brunch on Sunday.
Go ride a bike: $15. Another chance to get out and enjoy some Pocono fresh air. Pocono Bike Rental is welcoming bikers of all experience levels. The bike rentals are located in White Haven, between New Glen Summit D&L Trail and the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail. Check out their website, www.PoconoBikeRental.com/partners, for more information.
Father and Son Sunday: $5. Spend time with dad, or son, this weekend, when it’s more than appropriate. Salt Springs State Park is hosting some fun activities for dad/son bonding time. There will be treasure hunting, orienteering, rock scrambling and more. Head over to the state park at 2305 Salt Springs Road, Franklin Forks starting at 2 p.m. on June 21. Father’s Day: Free! A day with Dad is priceless. Have a barbecue or a beer with your dad and if haven’t gotten a card in the mail yet, you better get on that.
Summer Solstice Celebration: Free! Get ready to get a little earthy. Celebrate the summer soltice with solar viewing, solar lessons, solar power and other demonstrations ending with a bonfire and storytelling session in the evening.
