Affordable things to do in the Pocono region this weekend
Happy Birthday, Gifford. Free! To celebrate the 151st birthday of Gifford Pinchot, former Pennsylvania Governor and first Chief of the United States Forest Service, all three floors of his mansion are open free to the public from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Aug. 11. The Black Lillies. $23. Tennessee-based band The Black Lillies began in 2009 by multi-instrumentalist Cruz Contreras. At 7 p.m. Aug. 12, they’ll play 14 W. Broadway, Jim Thorpe venue Mauch Chunk Opera House. Admission is $23. For more information, call 570-325-0249.
PA Wing Fest. Free – $10. The 21st Annual Pennsylvania Wing Festival will run from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Pocono Raceway, 1234 Long Pond Rd., Long Pond. Admission is $10 for the general public, $5 for those will valid military ID and free for children 48” and under. Attendees will vote on the day’s best buffalo wing and best alternative wing awards, while judges will decide the hottest wing and chef/VIP choice awards. For more information, call 570-646-2300.
Sweet Corn & BBQ Fest. Free – $10. Roasted and steamed corn, beef, pork and chicken barbecue will all be available at Shawnee Mountain Ski Area’s Sweet Corn & BBQ Festival, held from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Aug. 13 and 14 at the ski area’s 401 Hollow Rd., East Stroudsburg location. In addition to food, the festival offers live music and a kids area with magic, juggling, trick rope and picnic games. Advance admission is $8 for adults and $6.50 for children.
