Well folks, it looks like that about does it for a very wacky 2009 fantasy season. By now, you are either wallowing in self pity, wondering why on earth you decided to play Peyton Manning in a meaningless game. Or you are on the flip side and thanking the big guy up above that you opted to bench Reggie Wayne for Roddy White.
Yours truly made it to the promised land in my Fox Sports – The Game league, only to fall off the edge at the end. I did, however, win a little bit of Christmas “cheer,” but winning the motherload would have been special. But I guess I shouldn’t complain. I would like to officially congratulate Les Murphy on winning the league. Don’t get used to it, though, as I am already gunning for a run in 2010.
Anyways, now that the NFL regular season is a week away from being over, let’s see what we have in store for the fantasy world next year. Oh, by the way, to those who actually have to set a lineup this weekend, I wish you luck. Hopefully, you have an unlimited waiver wire option, because there are going to be a bunch of studs on the bench.
1. Matt Hasselbeck’s four-interception game against the Packers should be the nail on the coffin for him as the Seahawks starter in 2010. He has lost a lot of arm strength and just can’t make the right decisions anymore. There was a rumor that the Browns and Mike Holmgren may have interest, but that would be a huge mistake. Avoid him at all costs, even if he somehow does end up starting.
2. I do like what I see from Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne. With 300-yard games in three out of the past four games, Henne could be a solid QB2 in 2010. He could reach QB1 status in the right matchups. I am hoping the ’Fins realize a No. 1 wide receiver could help their offense immensely.
3. It looks like there is going to be some major shakeups at running back for a couple teams in 2010. I believe the Chiefs will give Jamaal Charles every chance possible to keep the starting job. He is a hard runner and one of the better pass-catching backs in the league. Browns running back Jerome Harrison has looked solid the past two weeks, but don’t get too excited about him in 2010. He has yet to face a solid defense and could be a huge disappointment if he wins the starting job. The Texans’ backfield situation is a complete mess in my opinion. Arian Foster looked good Week 16, but he hasn’t done enough for me to look at him next year. Plus, Steve Slaton will be back. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Houston at least be rumored to be looking for a running back in the offseason.
4. It will be interesting to see what happens with Brett Favre. It looks like all the news regarding a rift between he and Brad Childress could be true to a point. If the Vikings don’t win a Super Bowl, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him hang them up again after everything that has happened. I hope not though. As much as a Favre hater I was, I think he makes the NFC more interesting. If he does stay, I wouldn’t have a problem drafting him late as my starting fantasy quarterback.
5. As an Adrian Peterson owner, I can say I will not be taking him as the No. 1 overall fantasy pick in 2010. Three 100-yard games isn’t what I was looking for, and he certainly didn’t help me this year. I will be lobbying for Chris Johnson all the way. The guy remains a complete beast, and I actually think he could be better next year.
6. Maybe I’m crazy, but I worry about the future of Michael Turner. After being run into the ground in 2008, he really got dinged up the past couple weeks. I would be too worried about his propensity to run too hard for his own good and go down with another serious injury again. I will likely avoid him next year.
That about wraps it up for me. I hope you all enjoyed what I had to offer this year when it pertains to all things fantasy football. I will be taking a hiatus as we enter the NFL playoffs and all the fun the offseason has to offer. Check back once training camps start opening. I am sure there will be something that will tick me off.
Happy New Year!
