Do you have a gamer on your gift list, and you just don’t know what to get them this Christmas? Hopefully, this list will help out on your next shopping trip.

Games are listed by title, genre, platform and Entertainment Software Rating Board rating.

The ESRB ratings are as follows: E for Everybody; E10+ for ages 10 and older; T for Teen and M for Mature. (Make sure to check the box on each game for more details on rating and platform.)

Action games emphasize fast-paced adventuring and exploration with puzzles to solve and natural hazards to avoid. Action games can have guns but usually rely on hand-to-hand combat. Meanwhile, a “shooter” almost always focuses on gunplay and engaging as many enemies as possible. Most of today’s games mix both genres equally, but there’s usually more to do in an action game than simply running around shooting things. Lastly, a role-playing game usually focuses on storytelling and character development.

The following games are all either action, shooter or role-playing games, and each is highly rated and extremely popular:

• “New Super Mario Bros.” — action — Wii — Rated E

• “Assassin’s Creed 2” — action — Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 — Rated M
