WEGMANS’ SUMMER SALUTE

Wegmans knows how to kick summer off right: This Saturday, June 13, the market will host a Beer & Food Pairing Event from 11 a.m.- p.m. in the Market Caf Restaurant.

Everyone is invited to the free event in which Wegmans’ chefs pair summery foods with beer. Tasting stations will feature steamed clams, sushi, mojo pork and more, plus those in attendance can also chat with brewery reps and the market’s chefs to get more ideas for summer feasts of their own.

Some dishes in the store’s Sunday flyer showcased Yuengling Lager and Lager-steamed clams, Sly Fox Route 113 IPA with chicken, spinach and feta sausage topped with tomato bruschetta on a wheat roll and Allagash Dubbel Belgian Style Ale paired with spicy tuna and California rolls.

The Wilkes-Barre Wegmans is located at 220 Highland Park Blvd. (570.825.4400), and the Scranton store is located at 1315 Scranton-Carbondale Highway (383.8721). You must be 21 or over to sample beer.

MORE THAN GROCERIES

In other grocery store news, the new Thomas’ Family Market in the Country Club Shopping Center in Dallas houses more than just groceries. Local restaurants Asaki Hibachi and Sushi Restaurant and Dino’s Italian Bistro (both in the Back Mountain Shopping Center in Shavertown) offer fresh, in-store sushi and pizza in the market’s deli area. Dino’s offers whole pizzas and slices to go and take-and-bake pizzas with various toppings. Asaki offers many types of sushi and more. A sushi chef is on site daily from 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

And, if that’s not enough, the store now carries hot dogs from Ranch Wagon Express. For more info, call 674.3000.

BAR BREAKER

The Bar (279 S. River St., Plains) begins its Summer Festival Series this Saturday, June 13 with a bash sponsored by Plains’ own Breaker Brewing Company from 3-8 p.m. The company will spotlight its Anthracite Ale, Goldies and Old King Coal brews.

PATIO PEOPLE

Cork Bar & Restaurant (463 Madison Street, Wilkes-Barre) will have Family Night on the Patio Wednesday, June 10. The night features free kids’ meals (must be with parent), sidewalk chalk art contest and more. For info, call 570.270.3818 or visit www.corkdining.com.

BROTHERS MMM

After spending Sunday working the Pocono 500, Editor Mike Lello and I stopped by The Brothers Shim (9701 Bear Creek Blvd., Bear Creek Twp.) for some sustenance. Having passed the bar/restaurant a million times, I had no idea this unassuming little place was so fantastic.

The Coors Banquets were ice cold (exactly what one needs on a race day), and the food? Even better! My fried shrimp were huge and savory, Mike’s beer-battered haddock was delicious and the steak fries were perfect, especially accompanied by those Coors.

With great service and super-reasonable prices (our bill came just $23), The Brothers Shim is worth the drive. For more info, call 472.3113 or see the menu at www.menusnepa.com.
