MYSTERY MOUTH: Gloriously good

“I thought I’d heard everything,” my wing-loving lunch companion Kip said upon hearing that Bo Brothers offered smoked wings. We set off immediately to the Wyoming establishment to scope them out.

Walking in, we fought off the urge to sit at the impressive bar and settled in an extremely comfortable booth in the dining room. Even with dark wood décor and black booths, the room was bright and airy, thanks in part to four white columns at its center, with booths nestled between them. Two flat-screen TVs were at either end, muted, so we could hear the music playing at a perfect volume.

Knowing we wanted to start with 10 medium smoked wings ($5.95), we excitedly perused the rest of the menu for our entrees.

Appetizers include the standards: mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers, mini potato pancakes, Texas toothpicks (fried onions and jalapeno sticks), all for $4.95. A sampler ($6.95) is available, as is a chicken, tomato, onion and pepper quesadilla ($5.95).

I had been wooed by one of the specials posted on the menu board in the entryway — a blackened chicken salad ($6.95). Other salad options were with grilled chicken, chicken tenders, buffalo chicken and tuna (all $6.95), chicken Caesar or chef for $7.95, or antipasto ($8.95).

There’s an array of basic burgers — and those not so basic: Texas (with chili, onions and cheese), Bo’s (topped with pulled pork), black and blue (blackened with bleu cheese), all for $6.95 and including fries. Turkey, veggie and two versions of foot-long hot dogs are also offered.

Baskets include chicken finger, popcorn chicken, breaded shrimp and pig wings, which all come with fries and range in price from $5.95-$6.95.

Sandwiches and subs also have a big selection of items (most priced at $5.95) from cheesesteaks to tuna. I almost forgot my salad when I saw the mild or hot homemade sausage patty for $6.95, but stayed true to my first choice.

Kip pondered getting something from the barbecue section, especially after reading that most of those items are smoked on the premises. Despite offering brisket, ham, pork shoulder (topped with house coleslaw), turkey and burnt brisket ends (all $6.95 with fries), Kip’s inner kid must have beckoned because after much debate, he went with toasted cheese and tomato ($3.95).

After giving our orders to our server Cynthia, we sat back and eagerly anticipated our wings.

They arrived looking and smelling fantastic, though Kip was “a little reticent” at how they looked browned and burnt, which was the exact reason I dove in so enthusiastically. But he came around after he took his first bite, though he would have liked a little more sauce. Again, I disagreed because I liked how these weren’t as sloppy as other wings we’ve shared. They were tender and juicy and, despite the medium heat which left my lips and tongue tingling, smoke was definitely the prominent flavor. We both found that a nice, tasty change from regular wings.

Our entrees came out not long after we pushed the bones away, and I was surprised at how large the portions were for both.

Kip’s golden toasted cheese was on two huge slices of Italian bread and the cheese was perfectly melted. When his eyes glazed over as he took his first bite, I took that as a good opportunity to steal a crispy fry, which had a light dusting of seasoning.

I took one more fry and turned my attention to my salad. It had an ample amount of fresh lettuce with thinly sliced cucumbers, a handful of grape tomatoes and plenty of crusty croutons. There was more than enough balsamic vinaigrette dressing and the blackened chicken breast was warm, tender and not too spicy. Just when I was about to comment that the lack of cheese held it back from being absolutely ideal, I came across shredded mozzarella under the chicken. Glorious!

Bo Brothers is not to be missed. It’s comfortable, from the booths to the friendly and attentive service, and definitely in the reasonable prices and great food.

If you haven’t met Bo yet, what are you waiting for?
