MAGIC HAT’S LIVING DEAD
Thanks to a care package from Magic Hat Brewing Company, I was introduced to the company’s new fall seasonal beers last week. The Night of the Living Dead variety 12-pack is dotted with funky skeletons and features the debut of Hex, Magic Hat’s “Ourtoberfest,” the return of hI.P.A., the fall India pale ale, and the company’s latest Odd Notion, Green Apple Wit.
Hex has a light amber color and a malty smell. Though the description says its mouth feel is “lightly vicious with a subtle sweet bite,” I found no veritable bite. Its flavor was also malty with a slight caramel tinge. I found it smooth and light.
hI.P.A. had a bright golden color, with a hoppy, earthy scent. Though it’s not listed as one of the ingredients, I tasted a distinct hint of mango. The taste was light with a strong after-bite that was just a little too much for me.
My favorite was definitely the Green Apple Wit, a cloudy golden-colored brew with a very fruity scent and a citrus-and-spice taste. When I first opened it, the smell of green apples was prominent — almost like a cider beer without that cider bite — but I didn’t get too much of an apple taste. Green Apple Wit is definitely the one I’ll be watching my old black-and-white horror movies with this fall — and toting along to upcoming Halloween parties.
The Night of the Living Dead 12-pack is anchored, as always, by Magic Hat’s mainstay, #9. Find the new beers at your favorite distributor, or visit www.magichat.net for more info on the Vermont brewery.
