SCOOTER GIRL: Christmas wish list

With just little more than a week left for shopping, decorating, baking and stress, there’s little time left to get everything on your favorite biker’s wish list. This week we’ll take a look at all the neat ideas and finds that I found on the Internet. However, don’t forget your favorite local shop for some things that you’ve seen throughout the year.

For women riders

VaVaVroom ( www.vavavroomonline.com) is a fun little site that had some items that I’m sure everyone will need for riding. I was especially taken by the motorcycle socks made with real silver. The tag line on the home pages asks, “Are you one of those girls?” They have a modest line of clothing and jewelry and some practical items like a battery charger. I was really interested in the boot bracelet. Since no one can really see the socks, a bracelet might be pretty hot to have on my boots. You can follow this company on Facebook and Twitter as well.

If your lady biker is interested in more than just clothes and fashion, she might like a membership in WOW, women on wheels ( www.womenonwheels.org/index.html). The group sponsors an international ride, which takes place in Stratton, Vt., this year. This organization was developed to help support women riders and work to gain them the respect they so deserve.

Harley-Davidson’s holiday catalog caught my eye with its catch phrase “For the naughty, the nice and those in between.” Which is good, since Santa only caters to those who have been nice! The 2009 holiday gift guide has many great selections and ideas. The catalog has jackets in leather, faux shearling and down, along with lots of accessories. It even has a cute little crystal hog piggy bank. You can save for next Christmas with this little bank. It also has Christmas tree ornaments.

You might also think about scheduling a rider’s safety course. The Pennsylvania Rider’s Safety Course opens registration on Feb. 24, and the first local class at Luzerne County Community College is on March 24. You can find more information about courses, places and days and times at www.pamsp.com. This suggestion works just as well for the men who ride as the women, and if you haven’t taken one of these courses, I strongly suggest that you do so. Even if you have taken it and it’s been a while, a refresher course is just the ticket.

Women Riders Now, an eZine with “motorcycle news and reviews” ( www.womenridersnow.com) has some really clever ideas in its Dec. 14 issue. This site is also something that you can suggest to your woman rider or subscribe to yourself. This is a good eZine with lots of current trends and suggestions for riders.

For the men who ride with us

Harley-Davidson probably has the best selection of gifts, both online and in-store. The branding of the product is tremendous, and there are jackets, pants, “dress” shirts and gadgets. Its top suggestions are things that men who love gadgets and gewgaws will love: a GPS system, a handle mount satellite radio (a must have!), helmet, and communications headset, to name just a few. Of course, if you don’t know which one he wants most, you can always get him a H-D gift card and let him pick it out himself. One note on that is that you can also buy a gift card from a dealer close to the person you want to send it, to and he can pick stuff up from the shop near him. I did that last year for my nephew in San Diego.

Now, if you’ve got a man with a sense of humor, check out this Web site: www.bikebits.us/store.php?CategoryID=1. It has comical ears that you can attach to his helmet, just in case he’s not getting enough attention with the loud pipes on his bike. I thought these were pretty funny. You might add them to his headband if he doesn’t wear a helmet.

Another idea for the male rider is to get him a set of tools that work for his bike. You never know when you might break down or need to change out a choke line or something.

If you’re really in doubt, how about a tattoo? There are a lot of tattoo artists in our area to choose from. Choose carefully and make sure that the artist autoclaves all instruments and doesn’t use old or outdated inks.

Be careful of online ordering, and make sure that what is being shipped will arrive on time. And don’t forget all of your local dealers and retail stores. Many of these local retailers are with you all year long and know this area better than any online retailer.
