SCOOTER GIRL: Any night’s a good night for bikes

Well, this summer has certainly put a damper on things. With rain 20 out of the 30 days of June and something close to that in July, many events have been getting rained on or rained out. And even if they are billed as “rain or shine,” most people don’t want to go out and get wet. One thing you can count on is that between those raindrops, lightning strikes, hail and thunder, there are still Bike Nights going on.

Poking around on the Internet and hitting up some friends, I’ve put together a weekly calendar of bike nights you can check into, should you want to do something between raindrops. And with this selection you’re good to go on almost every night.

Monday night finds most places closed.

Tuesday night seems made for Outsider’s in Wilkes-Barre. It has a large parking lot, and in the evenings you can also park across the street if it gets to crowded. I’ve heard that it does indeed attract a large crowd. They call the bike night “Two Wheel Tuesdays” and provide drink specials and entertainment.

Wednesday night is Quaker Steak and Lube’s bike night. There are two area locations for this company, in Bloomsburg and Dickson City. The Bloomsburg bike night has so far seen (unofficially) the largest of all of the bike nights, with close to 1,000 bikes. Quaker Steak has been running bike night for the past two years, and they seem to get bigger each year. This is the first summer for the Dickson City location. Bloomsburg’s event this week is featuring Harley Night, and the first 100 bikes get a Miller Lite Coozie. The location has a live band; this week its Route 15 that is one road not under construction. Acting as MC for the evening is WFYY’s own Tom Morgan from the “Morgan in the Morning” show.

Pat Gallagher of the East Coast Biker Chicks had this to say about the new Dickson City location: “The newest bike night in the Scranton area, Quaker Steak and Lube in Dickson City, is fast becoming a favorite of ECBC and a lot of other riders. They do an excellent job of parking the hundreds of bike that show up every week and always have great bands. They’re very biker-friendly, and bike nights are a great chance to get out during the week and see other bikers and their rides."

Thursday night has some competition for riders. You can choose either the Lone Star Steak House by the Wyoming Valley Mall or Jad’s Place (400 Route 315 in Pittston). This is at the site of the former Victoria Inns. You can also travel to Damon’s in Clarks Summit. I’ve been to the Lone Star, and there are usually some vendors there and a good crowd, with lots of parking with it being next to the mall. I have not been to Jad’s but have heard good things about it. Damon’s is a great ride if you take the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike from Wilkes-Barre, and it has pretty good parking as well.

Friday night has nothing that I can find, but that’s date night. Take your significant other out for dinner.

Saturday usually has organized rides with many of the above-mentioned places serving as the last stop. However, this Saturday is providing us with the PA Sturgis event. “Daniels & Webster’s 4th Annual Sturges Motorcycle Rally” will be held Aug. 1st at the Wildcat Saloon and Eatery in Sturges. If you can’t make the more than 1,500-mile trip to South Dakota for the Sturgis rally there, keep it local and head out to our Sturges, starting at 1 p.m. Directions, according to a press release from Guy Izzo: Route 247, Route 6 to Eynon, follow 247 down the hill, a mile on the left.

John Webster would like to note that “We are trying to help out Soldiers Angels Riding Club, Chapter 2, asking anyone who comes by to please, if they can, bring things like baby wipes, flea collars, hand sanitizers, non-perishable microwave meals, powdered drink mixes, toiletries, coffee, sugar, non-dairy creamer, Advil, Tylenol, Benadryl and snacks. It will all be shipped to the soldiers of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division in Afghanistan.”

Sunday you can head down to Berwick for Bandit’s Road House. Ample parking here as well, and Bandit’s calls its events Cycle Fest Sundays, with the last fest being held on Sept. 6 with a rain date of Sept. 13. There’s a steak special that day.

And, that my friends, is a week of bike nights.
