It’s the end of August, and summer is winding down with school just around the corner. College students have already started migrating back to their schools and are preparing for a new semester. If you are one of the many students returning to the area or starting out for the first time, you should consider making a few changes in order to protect our precious environment. Going green in your dorm or off-campus home does not have to mean drastically changing your lifestyle. This fall is the perfect time to start making changes and lessen your impact on the environment.
We all know how exciting it is to live away from home for the first time. Furnishing your new dorm room or apartment is one of the first things you do when you move. An easy way to start your green lifestyle and save money is to reuse items rather than buying brand new. If you buy all new items, just think of how much waste that would create. Instead, you can check out Craigslist or the Salvation Army to find used furniture; You may even be able to score some used items for free.
Many universities ban air conditioning units in dorm rooms. If you do have an air conditioner, one of the most eco-friendly things you can do as a student is to cut back on your AC use or stop using it all together. Instead of running your AC nonstop, try opening your window or studying outdoors on a nice day. If you live in a region that is unbearably hot, try getting a low-energy AC unit.
Another great way to be eco-friendly at college is to purchase sheets, curtains and towels that are made from organic cotton. These items were made from cotton that was grown without harmful pesticides. If you live in an off-campus apartment or house, it’s a good idea to also limit the use of disposable cups and plates by purchasing some inexpensive plates that you can easily wash.
Most colleges and universities have recycling bins in residence halls in order to create a greener community for students. If you have recycling, make sure you participate and also encourage other residents to do the same.
If you live in a dorm, you are most likely pretty close to everything, so it’s a good idea to walk or ride your bike to class rather than driving your car. A majority of college campuses are pedestrian-friendly and even offer public transportation, so you might be able to get by without a car.
Going back to college can be a daunting (sometimes even scary) experience as it is, but if students take small steps to conserve the environment it can really add up and make a difference.
