Last year, I became an online ordained minister to show my support for same sex marriage. I think it’s laughable that some people feel same sex couples having the right to get married devalues the sanctity of marriage.

Just because Neil Patrick Harris has a penis doesn’t mean mine is any less real.

I feel that if you don’t believe in gay marriage, then just don’t marry a gay person. That’s why I vowed to marry any gay person as soon as it became legal in Pennsylvania – as the person officiating the ceremony. Love is love, after all, whether it’s with a man, a woman, or your Netflix account.

For a while, I sat in the company of people ordained with the Universal Life Church, including Rob Dyrdek, Kathy Griffin, and Conan O’Brien, abiding the time of intolerance with doubt that Pennsylvania would ever submit to the legalization of same sex marriage. Then, on May 20, Pennsylvania became the 19th state to honor it. I realized it was now my time to rock out with my ministry badge out!

I posted an ad on Craigslist searching for a same sex couple to officiate a wedding for. A week later, I got an e-mail from Sgt. Paul Onisick of the Pennsylvania National Guard that said he wanted to marry the love of his life. I asked him to call me right away.

“I met the love of my life on Craigslist,” he explained. “We met just looking for sex and found so much more. I was in a relationship with a girl, and he was looking for a person to have a threesome with him and his partner. It became a regular thing, but then we fell in love.”

“Wow, that’s pretty candid,” I acknowledged.

“That’s where most gay men in the closet meet people. It was right before Grindr. It happens. There shouldn’t be any shame behind it,” he asserted.

I was a little on the fence about how I felt about his abrupt honesty until he shared an intimate detail of his relationship.

“I knew I had to spend the rest of my life with him when I saw kindness radiate from him when he was around his teenage children from his first marriage,” he opened up to me.

So they set off to New York state, where it was legal for them to be married.

“It felt so impersonal, secretive, and shameful having to go to another state to get married,” he answered. “We didn’t get to celebrate that moment with any of our friends or family. Then when we got home, it wasn’t even legally recognized in our home state.”

My heart went out to him. This was a man who served overseas to fight for a land of freedom, and meanwhile he wasn’t allowed to marry the man he loved. That’s why I decided to give Paul and his husband the opportunity to get married in their home state at an upcoming taping of my online talk show, “The Millennials.”

On June 27 at 6 p.m. at my Adult Night Swim Show taping for “The Millennials,” in front of the wave pool at Montage Mountain Water Park, I will have the honor of extending Sgt. Paul Onisick the freedom he fought for me to have when I marry him and his partner in front of his family, friends, and anyone else who would like to celebrate love.

When his mom walks him down the aisle, everyone around will be witnessing love, and that’s all anybody really needs to understand.
