She’s 25 years old and has both traditional country and contemporary pop music fans singing along to her tunes. All in the meanwhile, Kacey Musgraves is breaking down cultural barriers and stereotypes as quickly as she is adding tour dates and awards to her mantel.

Musgraves’ major label debut, “Same Trailer Different Park,” spurred an eventful 2013 for the artist. The album hit shelves in March; that summer, she found herself opening up for Kenny Chesney in stadiums across the country.

And 2014 is proving to be an even bigger year. Musgraves and her light-up boots were introduced to a national audience at the Grammys. She performed at the award show and took home hardware for Best Country Song (“Merry Go ‘Round”) and Best Country Album.

But it is another track from the LP, “Follow Your Arrow,” that has country fans and more excited for what is to come from the Texas native.

“The reaction has been insane,” Musgraves said of the public’s response to the song. “That song I feel like has done more for me and my career than any other song.”

But the impact of “Follow” stretches beyond chart numbers and sales figures.

“It’s just crazy because it’s bridged a lot of gaps,” she continued. “I feel like it has maybe opened up some minds that maybe wouldn’t have been in support for that kind of thing before hearing it.”

Musgraves is referring to acceptance and equality, specifically in regards to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. In “Follow” she sings, “So, make lots of noise. Kiss lots of boys. Or kiss lots of girls, if that’s something you’re into.”

The country crooner’s message of acceptance is resonating; GLAAD recently invited her to perform at its awards ceremony in New York. Musgraves was the first country artist to ever do so.

“It was just cool to be able to bring country music and GLAAD together,” she recalled. “And just support everybody. Equal love.”

The love is spread throughout other performance venues as well. Musgraves sports quite the diverse itinerary this summer.

“I’m a huge Katy Perry fan, and she’s been so good to me,” the singer said as she prepares to support Perry for a portion of her “Prismatic World Tour” this year. “Oh my gosh, it’s going to be fun.”

Before she primes crowds for pop royalty, she’ll do the same for a country legend, as Musgraves is also slated to tour with Willie Nelson.

“I don’t really feel the need to change anything (for Perry’s tour),” she said. “I feel like Katy wanted to bring on the people she chose to be on tour because she likes what they do.”

That said, Musgraves said that there will be some added visual effects to her set. Capital Cities and Tegan and Sara will also open for Perry throughout the North American trek.
