Jason Derulo already performed his hit “Talk Dirty” on ABC once; the artist brought a rousing rendition of the song to the network’s “Dancing with the Stars” competition. Derulo and his No. 1 record will return to ABC when he sings it during the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. The show airs May 18 at 8 p.m. live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

“I think I might be adding a little bit of one of my new songs in there,” he noted to “Ralphie Tonight” when speaking about what will be different about this particular rendition. “You got to go big and completely change it up. I feel like the whole world saw (the ‘DWTS’) performance so you can’t do that again. That’d be kinda wack.”

Derulo confirmed he would work in his next single from his new album, for which “Talk Dirty” serves as the title track. At the moment, that is slated to be the Snoop Dogg-assisted “Wiggle.” The artist’s third studio LP also features cameos from 2 Chainz, Tyga, Kid Ink, Pitbull via a bonus track, and girlfriend Jordin Sparks. His relationship with Sparks played into our chat when I asked him about predictions for which act would take home the Top New Artist award. Ariana Grande is one of the finalists and is Derulo’s pick.

“I think her voice is amazing,” the “In My Head” singer opined. “Jordin wrote her first single (‘The Way’). Just had to throw that in there!”

Derulo helped announce some of the finalists last week live on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Of the four categories I asked his thoughts on, he would only give a definitive answer on one other one: the highly-coveted Top Artist.

“Well, the fact that Justin (Timberlake) has been nominated for like, 70 of these…” he joked. “I think it’s safe to say that he was the top artist.”

Timberlake is a finalist in 11 different categories. He falls just shy of Imagine Dragons and Lorde, who are each up for 12 different awards a piece. He has yet to win a BBMA as a solo artist; his previous five wins came with ‘N Sync.

According to Billboard, the finalists for each category “are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital singles sales, radio airplay, touring, streaming, and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, VEVO, Spotify, and other popular online destinations for music.” The data that Billboard used came from March 11, 2013 through March 9 of this year.

In addition to the categories that Derulo helped to announce, there is the second annual fan-voted Milestone award, “given to an innovative artist who has achieved a notable chart milestone over the past year.” The finalists include Imagine Dragons, John Legend, Luke Bryan, OneRepublic, Ellie Goulding, and Carrie Underwood.
