The University of Scranton’s Urban Beats Crew intends to uptown funk you up at their 10th annual end-of-year showcase at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 18 — an event the 31 crew members have been gearing up for all school year long.

“Starting from our very first practice, we spend all year building up to our annual showcase,” said member and crew treasurer David Polanco. “It is our biggest event of the year. We get to show our classmates, families and the Scranton community every dance we’ve performed throughout the year — plus brand new choreography that we’re very proud of. The showcase is a culmination of a year’s worth of hard work, dedication and passion.”

Although UBC is a hip-hop dance crew, Polanco said the showcase will feature a wide variety of dance styles, including step, jazz, ballet, lyrical, salsa and break-dancing.

The crew enjoys many different styles of dancing that reflect the diversity of the group.

“The beauty of Urban Beats Crew is that all of us dance for different reasons. Some have been dancing their whole lives and some auditioned on a whim and felt a spark. No matter where we come from or who we are, all of us share an unbroken bond through our love of dance,” Polanco said.

The dance crew’s motto is, “No one gets us, but we get each other, and that’s what matters,” Polanco said. “Dance brought us all together as one. That’s why to all of us, dance means family.”

Admission is open to the public for $5, a small fee that will help benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
